

Sustainability Career Paths for Students

2023 Student Ambassador Projects
JL Mann High School Students conducted their third annual art contest for K-12 students in Greenville County. The contest website was updated and maintained.
Certificates were awarded to winners.


Cane Bay High School Student taught other high school students about sustainability through a school-wide assembly. The student included topics of local recycling information, renewable energy in South Carolina, waste that is created in everyday life and landfills.
A Home School Student conducted an experiment to see how incorporating permaculture with gardening would produce more produce or even better produce.


Lugoff-Elgin High School Students started a composting program complimented with a share table program. They also created a pollinator garden.
More Success in 2023
- Academy for Arts, Science & Technology Students created a project, in conjunction with the Horry County Recycling Coordinators, to help all high schools in the county reduce contamination in their school’s recycling program.
- Berkeley Middle College High School Student participated in a litter clean-up in conjunction with Keep Berkeley County Beautiful. Litter prevention education was also presented to neighborhood elementary school students.
- A Porter Academy Student created a green newsletter for students and teachers with environmental education, news and sustainability tips.
- A Sumter High School Student lead the Junior Civitan’s to complete several Saturday litter clean-up events in conjunction with Keep Sumter Beautiful. The student also wrote a skit for “Stash the Trash” and recruited several classmates to participate in a video about litter.
- Walhalla High School Students organized a planter give-away event mixed with upcycling items. The event was held for the entire student body.
2022 Student Ambassador Projects
A Dreher High School Student continued for a second year to write a green e-newsletter for students and teachers with environmental education, news and sustainability tips.


JL Mann High School Students conducted their second annual art contest for K-12 students across South Carolina. A website was created and prizes were awarded to winners.
Blythewood High School Students created a compost program for the school and built composting bins. Composting education was shared with other students at the high school.


A Home School Student created a garden after first germinating seeds in his green house.
Academy for Arts, Science & Technology Students started a garden by planting vegetables in raised garden beds by first germinating the seeds in a greenhouse located on campus. A pollinator garden was also established.

More Success in 2022
- A Student from the Academic Magnet High School created a project
with the intention of bringing sustainability and climate change
education to Title 1 Schools through a lesson involving games, prizes,
and long-term goal planning. The lesson plan involved professors at the College of Charleston, DNR, the Charleston Sustainability Plan, and other academic resources. - Berkeley Middle College High School Student recruited other students to participate in litter clean up with conjunction with Keep Berkeley County Beautiful. Other efforts of litter education was shared with high school students.
- A Porter Academy Student created a pollinator garden that included a
raised garden bed and wild flower seeds. - A Silver Bluff High School Student conducted an audit to assess the
food waste, recycling and energy practices that are currently endorsed by the school. Results and improvement ideas were shared with the faculty about the ways the school could operate more sustainably.
